Global Digital Divide Initiative 2000 FROM THE GLOBAL DIGITAL DIVIDE TO THE GLOBAL DIGITAL OPPORTUNITY The Global Digital Divide Initiative of the World Economic Forum was launched at the Annual Meeting 2000 held in Davos, Switzerland, at a gathering of top information technology and media, communications and entertainment sector executives. These executives initiated the formation of a Task Force to explore creative ways to engage stakeholders from around the world in dialogue and action on addressing the challenge of bridging the global digital divide. As a first step, the Task Force developed a set of shared principles which have since evolved into a Statement of over 20 pages on policy actions and initiatives each stakeholder group can undertake to transform the global digital divide into the global digital opportunity. This Statement has been provided to the Government of Japan, at their invitation as presidency of the G-8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit meeting. This Statement represents an ongoing effort of the Task Force on the Global Digital Divide Initiative of the World Economic Forum to develop and propogate creative private-public sector initiatives to transform the divide into an opportunity for growth. This document reflects and elaborates on views expressed in earlier Task Force meetings held in Geneva, Rio de Janeiro and Washington DC. It will continue to be informed by the Global Digital Divide Initiative meetings held in association with the Forum's Regional Economic Summits and will form the basis of discussion and review at our Annual Meeting 2001 in Davos. Several activities are enumerated in the Statement, which will be explored as activities for the Task Force leading up to our next Annual Meeting. ^ ^ ^ ^ Steven L.
