I was trying to login to listen to the CBC around 8:30 EST to check
out the news coverage of the Canadian elections when I found this at
<http://cbc.ca/audio.html>:

Thanks for coming to cbc.ca to listen to the audio from CBC Radio.
Tonight it will not be available from 7:00 pm ET until 10:00 pm ET.
This is due to regulations set up by Elections Canada for today's
election. Everything will be back to normal when all of the polls in
Canada are closed.

Very interesting. Imagine trying that in the United States - might
have change our election outcome! You might want to check out the
various linked from my recent Canada post
<http://www.egroups.com/message/do-wire/747> and here is more on part
of the Internet being turned off in Canada tonight from
<http://www.sfu.ca/~aheard/elections/results.html>.

Election 2000 Results

From:
http://www.sfu.ca/~aheard/elections/results.html

Following the results unfold on election night is one of most fun
things someone interested in politics can do. For the 2000 Federal
Elections, there are a variety of ways in which you can keep up to
date. Be aware, however, that recent changes made to the Election
Act prohibit someone in one electoral district from "transmitting"
the results to someone else in a riding where the polls have not yet
closed. As a result you may experience a delay in discovering
results until after 10 pm EST, when the voting will have ended across
the nation.

The most authoritative site for election results will be Elections
Canada, whose site will provide a number of options for you to view
the results. National and provincial results will be provided, but
you will also have the option of customizing the screen and viewing
up to 144 separate tables of results of areas of particular interest
to you. In a novel move, Elections Canada will also e-mail you the
election night's preliminary results for you to analyze in a database
on your own computer.

A regularly updated map of election results will also be available
from the National Atlas project at Natural Resources Canada.

The main media elections sites will also provide results as election
night results come in.

For those who just can't wait...

Ivan Smith of ElectionResultsCanada.com plans to defy the ban on
early publication of election results. He is also offering updates
by e-mail, pager, or cell phone. November 27 update: Smith's ISP
provider appears to be blocking access to this site.

Election results will also be available from Radio Canada
International, which plans to carry a live election night broadcast
between 2 and 5 UTC (9-12 EST). Radio Canada International broadcasts
live on the Internet in RealPlayer format. You can listen at 16K or
at 32K data streams, depending on your Internet connection - faster
is better! RCI's usual broadcast mode is by radio on Short Wave
frequencies - check the Technical Schedule for frequencies for
specific language broadcasts, times, and continents. You should note
that RCI alternates English and French broadcast periods.

You can also try your luck with early results that may be broadcast
on the RealAudio broadcasts of CBC St. John's and CBC Halifax.
November 27 update: CBC appears to be blocking the Internet broadcast
of the local stations this evening until 10pm EST!!
