FYI, in response to requests for more info about how we actually
work with the documentation internally here at e-smith, I've put
together a document that describes it at:

  http://www.e-smith.org/docs/docprocess.html

I will warn you that setting up a system to process DocBook documents
is not a trivial task. There are other tools out there, too, beyond the
ones that we use. For instance, most Red Hat Linux systems come with
tools of the format "db2pdf"... do 'ls /usr/bin/db2*' on a stock RH system
(not an e-smith server). Those tools will take a DocBook file and generate
the appropriate output. The XML tools are also also supposedly maturing
to the point where they are stronger, too.

The challenge we had is that we wanted some finer control over layout
than was provided by the "db2xxx" commands. So I had to plunge into this
whole world of things to make it all work. It took a long time and was
quite an involved process.

The good news now, of course, is that I can create a DocBook SGML file -
or someone can send me one - and with basically one command (a call to
a script) I can generate HTML, PDF, and text from that one file. I could
also generate RTF or MIF (for FrameMaker), but I have not had any need
to do so.

In any event, the document is up there. Comments are welcome.

Regards,
Dan
