Sorry for the delay in responding, as this required a bit of research.
The DocBook TC is on record as intending to do a Simplified DocBook 5,
but it has not yet happened. Instead, the TC spent its time developing
a different DocBook variant called the DocBook Publishers Schema. Like
Simplified, this schema removes technical documentation elements, but
unlike Simplified, it includes book, chapter, and other structure
elements beyond article.
That's interesting. Has the TC ever considered modularizing DB ?
One of last summer's GSoC projects was about adding API-level markup
(including stylesheets). A particularly interesting aspect of that work
was that it adds a domain-specific vocabulary as an extension, rather
than adding to DB itself.
There are a number of DB sub-domains that could really be made available
as extension "profiles", leaving a "core" grammar that would be smaller,
and could potentially match what you describe as the "Publishers Schema".
Thanks,
Stefan
