Dave, Bob,
Thank you for your advice. I will look at DocBook only. Indeed, it will
be more simple for me to use only one format and one set of tools.
I have already try to format some productsheets using <article> and it
works fine. I use <section> and the role attribute to split
productsheets in specialized parts (commercial arguments,
specifications, additional pictures, system-charts and so on).

Hi Vincent,
I do consulting in both DocBook and DITA, and I think DocBook can meet
your needs. Adding DITA will unnecessarily complicate your setup
because it requires its own set of tools.
I've helped clients use DocBook for both instruction manuals and
product sheets. Instruction manuals are typically based on the <book>
element, possibly with modular design of the XML files so they can be
reconfigured into different releases. Product sheets are typically
based on <article>. Depending on your formatting needs, the content
might be inside a layout table or use multicolumn output format for
print.

Dear all docbook-list members,
I'm a XML user but a newbie with docbook.
I'm the webmaster in Optique Unterlinden, the most important shop of
telescopes and astronomy accessories in France. I have created our
online store few years ago using XML to format the product sheets (with
our own little DTD).
Now the shop is growing and I would like to use a more serious XML
format like DocBook ; we have a lot of products and a lot of output
documents to manage (product sheets or instruction manuals in HTML,
PDF, etc.). It becomes a nightmare.
So, I have 2 questions :
- Should I use DocBook for product sheets AND instruction manuals ?
Should I use a more "task-oriented" format like DITA for instruction
manuals and use DocBook only for product sheets ?
- Is there any existing DocBook product sheet template that I could
reuse or should I create my own one ?
Thank you
