OK, I've applied some of the Allan's fixes (didn't finish them all yet) and added a few new things. Here it is:

I think so. Might be able to use a very simple (i.e. small) bg texture to make it more interesting. What I like is that there are fewer lines (graphical elements) on the page.

Yes, I agree, Thomas?

- frontpages of the modperl books as ads.

Good! I think that makes the page look more interesting, and sows that mod_perl is real (there's books!).

That's an interesting argument :) I guess that's the first impression. What I was worrying about is that it's going to be distracting in a long run, when you get to see the same big images everywhere.

Nothing is final, I was just playing around trying to apply some of the things we have discussed recently, and if I made things worse this will be fixed.

I assume there's a way to build different versions of the site by
specifying different template directories?

That's what we do now. But currently there is only one version under cvs.

I still like Allan's smaller fonts. Or is that just on my browser?

Uhm, I think that the css files are a little bit messed up. There is some duplication in these, if we could restructure these to have a clearer inheritance, so for example font families and sizes won't be repeated unless they override the default (body?).

One of the next things I plan to port from Allan's design is the [prev|up|next], so does everybody agree with the fixed text, rather than real titles? Also I prefer to have a symmetric [prev|next] rather then full length's [previous|next].

I argued against the full titles. But I'm not that against them if they are small and don't stand out.

What if if we take the breadcrumb and [prev-next] widget and split it from the content box. Would things look better than if we keep the full names? Or you don't see any added value in having the real names, versus prev|next?

I'd argue that the bread crumbing should be moved out of the content area,
as it's more global navigation. Let's see, like linux.com has it, perhaps?
The [prev|next] is good in the content area since it's directly related to
the content.

I guess not than.
