one argument against this might be that the more stuff we
put into the same bar the worse will it look when a user
decrease her window width to be more narrow. apart from
<pre>-tags it should theoretically be possible to narrow the
window almost only to the menu width and still look "ok" if
you get me.


True, but then it should wrap in the extreme case.

So if we remove the TOC title, we can have

  download search prev/next

in one line. I think it should fit everywhere. Especially for not there will be no 'search' widget.

regarding the fig4 and fig5, that's not what were talking about. We wanted the content boxes to be B&W, and to use a different bg color for the space between the content boxes. No?
