I actually like the non-form buttons for search boxes. The real buttons are too big and ugly. How about putting the search box below the menu. I don't think it needs to be right at the top of the content part of the page. Another idea would be a small banner on top with a few key links and a search box on the far right. Look at the small bar with the search box at http://www.linux.com/. Too bad their icon is busted.
