I had asked about this before, too. As I understand it: The 'let expire' thing will affect only the "optional" messages, but they MUST send at least one, which for Tucows is the 5-day. The 90-60-30 day are optional, we can choose to send or not.
You are probably listed as the tech contact to see the 5-day notice. For those domains where you are not listed as a contact, you won't see the 5-day, but the client still will regardless of the 'let expire' setting.
