Hello ,
As a reply to the recent "Music Man" postings to the
Doobies list, this song likely never caught on because Warner Brothers
probably never heavily promoted this tune as a single. Focusing on
"Take Me In Your Arms" and "Sweet Maxine" the record company probably
never devoted many resources to publicizing "Music Man" after the
considerably musically stronger "Sweet Maxine" hit only as high as
number 40 for a single week following "Take Me In Your Arms" spending
nine weeks in the Top Forty as high as number 11.
With the frantic "Neal's Fandango" and haunting "I Cheat
The Hangman" also on the very same lp even the most dedicated devotee as
well as casual pedestrian hum along listener was musically preoccupied
with tunes other than "Music Man".
Great song, one of my favorites, and with "Sweet Maxine"
the most directly Motown influenced of the Doobies' original tunes !
