All I can say is WOW. What a great, great show in York, PA last night.
Here's my take of the band. I haven't seen them live since 1994. Back then,
though I loved the show and the boys loved playing, to me, they looked like
an oldies band playing oldies music (though extremely good oldies music). But
now, with the new stuff coming out, they looked fresh, energized and really
cookin'. This was the first time I've seen them in person with Skylark, Guy
Allison and Marc Russo. Before these 3 came, the guys who played keyboards,
bass, etc. looked like musicians who were brought in to "play WITH" the
Doobies. In contrast, Skylark, Guy and Marc ARE Doobies. They fit so well
with the band. Skylark is just a bundle of energy and a real trip to watch.
Guy is an amazing keyboard player and I love the way Marc just kind of hangs
around until it's time ti wail. And boy does he wail on that sax.
The new stuff is awesome. I've been frustrated hearing all of you talk
about "People Gotta Love Again". I've downloaded it both at home and at work
but because of software issues at home and communications issues at work,
have not been able to hear it. Last night was my first and what a great,
GREAT song. If radio stations don't pick up this song and play it 'til it
hurts, there's an anti-Doobie conspiracy somewhere. Classic Doobie style but
hot and NEW. And what a great message and what a fantastic groove that song
has. I hope the studio version captures at least part of the feel the live
performance had.
It wast also good to hear live versions of some songs I haven't heard them
do in many, many years. Like others, I won't elaborate so not to spoil it for
those going to concerts in the near future.
And then, the topping on the whole night was when we got the priviledge of
going backstage to meet the band. This is something I've dreamed of every
since 1973 when I feel in love with the Doobies. And, as it has been repeated
on this list MANY times, what a great bunch of guys. They were tired and
hungry, but they took time out to talk with us, sign autographs and take
pictures. I didn't get to meet the whole band (due to some senselessness on
the part of their handlers), but I did get to meet Keith Knudsen, John McFee,
Mike Hossack and (of course an absolute REQUIREMENT) Patrick Simmons (my
personal all time favorite Doob). What an honor. And these guys didn't just
drop in, say a quick hi and disappear, they were hanging around after most of
our people had left. Patrick was talking in almost a whisper because his
voice was shot, but still stodd there for a long time talking (softly) with
us. I thanked John for taking the time to meet with us and, he shook my hand
and said how much he liked being able to meet us. What great guys!!!
Great, GREAT, GREAT thanks to Torey and Laurin for making the post show
meet and greet happen. We are forever in your debt. It was a night this
hardcore Doobie fan will never, ever forget. Well, I consider myself
hardcore, but I think I pale in comparison to some of you I met last night.
Another nice thrill to meet some you. And thanks to those of you who were
gracious enough to man our camera so both my wife and I could get into the
pictures with the Doobs.
I may have to talk my wife into a trip to Saratoga next year. She's not a
Doobie fanatic like me, but she's got time.
