Great Doobie experience stories, John and Joel. More of those are always fun
to read on this list.

Doobies Rule,

John, why didn't you pick me up that night in 1973 and take me to the show
?? I think my mom would have let me go even though I was only in 3rd grade.
Well, maybe not! I didn't discover the Doobs unit 1976 while watching a PBS
special called Sound Stage. Back then, we only got 3 channels in central
PA, one was public television. (The good days man ) Anyway, I thought these
guys are cool, I heard some of there stuff on radio, but never saw them
before. Then, about a week later, a friend of mine joined one of those
record clubs (without his moms permission!! ) and as he was trying to decide
what groups to pick, I said, "hey, I saw these guys on TV, there great !"
The only trouble we had was trying to find a penny to stick on the card !!
Well, a couple weeks later his box of 8 TRACKS arrived and we listened to
them all. I borrowed the Doobie Brother tape (Captain and Me ) and never
gave it back !! I think I gave him a Styx album or something so he wouldn't
kick my butt. My dad had an old guitar he played in church so I asked him
to teach me some chords, he did and I took his guitar and never gave that
back either. He didn't really mind though, I still have it too. couple
months later I got a paper route and took my first couple months pay and
went down to the hardware!! Remember when the drug stores and hardwares
sold records and tapes !! Wow ! Any ways, I bought every Doobie album I
could find and my fascination with their music has never died. I saw them 4
times during my teen years mostly down in Columbia Maryland at the Pavilion.
However, I never got to see my guitar hero Tom Johnston until 2 weeks ago in
New York City at the HMV record store. My wife and I each called in sick
that day and drove to the city, 400 miles round trip, to meet them. What a
great day !!! I not only got to meet them, I got my custom tele signed and
had pictures taken with Tommy and Pat. On the way home, my wife looked at
me and asked if it was worth it? I just smiled at her, thanked her for
understanding and making the trip with me, and turned up the cd player,
Rockin Horse !!! Take me back in time !! I'll never forget that day, ever !!
Sorry for being long winded, take care everybody, have a good day, Joel

OK, here's the scoop (not official, tho) and a story.

I first saw the band in the summer of '73; the Captain tour. Pat was playin
his
335, (actually I was informed that it was a 350 w/veritone stereo which he
removed) and Tommy was playin' his SG w/ the upside down U.S. flag (see the
LTR
box set booklet). Tommy had broken a string on the SG. This concert was at
the
Celebrity Theatre, a small (3500) seat place that was "in the round". You
can
see everything as the stage rotates. There was a roadie feverishly tuning a
Les
Paul Gold Top. Pat notices Tommy standing back by the amps (Fender Twins
miked
to the house speakers, for both Pat and Tommy) and sees that he's gotta keep
the
middle finger-picking session going. He moves forward, bobbing his head
like he
does and the center session keeps going and going. Man! What a version of
the
song. Finally Tommy gets the Gold Top and the bells start and wham! That
Gibson just cranked! It was powerful. The crowd (which had been giving Pat
a
standing ovation) went bonkers...just blown away. Myself included.

It was one of many magical moments that night and could not have been
better.
Uh...wait...yep. It did get better...the encore had Without You!

Now, I can't say what setup and guitars were used for the recording of
CATDS,
but the live version was something else. Many people ask why I am such a
fan of
the Doobs...now you know.

John

Oh yeah...the sound was impeccable. Perfect.
