When Tony LaRussa introduced Tommy, I heard several cheers! I thought
maybe some of my fellow Doobie Brother fans were here! I can't believe
how few people on this list are from the Bay Area, home of the Doobies!
Tommy took the stage and mentioned that this was the first time he was
here and how happy he was to be a part of it. Then he asked if we were
ready to "Rock 'N' Roll"? He started off with "Long Train Runnin'" The
audience recognized it, but I thought they were all dead! No one was
moving! This is to be expected at a benefit show, but it was so strange
to see. It was also a bit weird to see Tommy playing his songs WITHOUT
the rest of the Doobies, but the band did a good job of playing along.
Pat where are you? :_(
He tried to get everyone to sing along but I swear, Betty and I were the
only ones singing! Don't these people know the words yet?!!!
As soon as the song ended, Tommy said "It's time for the Blues!" I was
thinking maybe "Down in the Track"? I was pleasantly surprised with
"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman"! YES!!! Not to complain, but it wasn't a good
mix and Tommy's guitar was lost a bit. I wanted to hear it WAIL those
heart tugging notes that he plays with such perfection. I wanted it to
move everyone to tears like it does me everytime, but instead it came
out mushy and lost with the rest of the band. It should have stood out
as brilliantly as it does at all his other performances where it grabs
you by your soul and holds you in its grip and won't let you go until
that guitar has cried out its last note and leaves you hungry for more!
I really think the audience was lost on this song. You know how it is
when you hear a new song in concert for the first time? You sometimes
feel a bit lost as you aren't sure where the song is going? It's
unfamiliar and hard to understand. This is the impression I got as I
watched the crowd NOT react to the soulful changes in the song that
usually knocks my socks off. Instead, the crowd just sat there... But I
was into it and so was Betty! :) What else matters?
And now Tommy really let loose with a great surprise. "SHOW ME"!!!! What
a great song! Marc was excellent and fit right in perfectly. I think the
crowd woke up a bit on this one, finally! When Tommy asked, "Show me a
Man that has got a good woman", I answered "Right here Tommy"!!!! :)
This song was so perfect because not only was I with the MOST beautiful
woman in the house, she was more importantly, the most wonderful woman there.
"Show me two people that's in love with each other..." Wow! This was the
perfect song for us. Thank you Tommy! ;) What a night!!! :))))))
And now Tommy pulls out "China Grove"! The crowd never got up once, but
I think they all enjoyed this one anyway. Betty and I were hoping for
"Listen to the Music" but it wasn't to be. This was the final song.
Short, but oh so sweet! :) We were both very happy as Betty and I saw
our two musical heroes, Dennis DeYoung for her and Tommy for me. What an
incredible night
We missed Michael Bolton when we went out to the bar for a drink. Darn!
;) I think he did fewer songs than Tommy! We came back in to see the
final song where everyone took the stage including Tommy and Dennis and
I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember what the last song was! It was a
standard and I just can't remember what it was. Must have been because
of the company I was with! ;)
It was truly a wonderful show and John McFee played his heart out and
helped to make the show special. He always amazes me with his talent.
Both he and Marc Russo added an important element to the show and really
helped to make the night enjoyable. I'm still blown away that Marc was
the Musical Director. What an excellent choice!
Thank you Betty for a wonderful night. Not only did she pop for both
tickets, but she insisted on buying me dinner too! What a woman! :)))))
I'm at a loss as to why I'm so damn lucky!
