PAT SIMMONS: "Whew, boy." JIM LADD: "Good song!" PAT SIMMONS: "Let's see... I wrote that soon after we finished our first album, "The Doobie Brothers" which was, kinda didn't go too far." JIM LADD: "So this is an old tune, even though it's on the..." (new album) PAT SIMMONS: "Yeah, it's probably 1971 I guess I wrote it. Of course it's gone through some changes and things since then. But I came up with the tune and it's a real weird tuning on the guitar, I always make up my own tuning of some type. Half of an open "D" and half of a normal tuning. So you've got your high strings, "D", "A", "F-sharp" and then the low strings normal tuning "E", "A", "D". I don't know if this'll... if you can put this together, but I wrote the tune anyway about three years ago and tried to record it for the Toulouse Street Album and it didn't work and I hung it up 'til this last album and we started listening back to our old tapes and it was on there in pretty much the same form that it is now. Except for the middle section that we changed a little bit." "Did a lot of sound..., different sound things to achieve sort of a latin feel, number one, and to achieve a feeling of ocean movement and so on. I used to live near the ocean in Santa Cruz so I guess I rode that tide with the ocean, that was around. I do a lot of surfing and stuff and I always dig the ocean so that was the feel I was trying to get out of the tune." Tomorrow: Tom describes his motorcycles.
