PAT SIMMONS: "Oh, yeah!" JIM LADD: "More so then performing or does it just kinda go hand-in-hand?" PAT SIMMONS: "No, they all I think go hand-in-hand." JIM LADD: "There has been a lot of original material. How do you feel about that? Are The Doobie Brothers going to remain a group oriented to original material?" TOM JOHNSTON: "We've done other tunes from other people but ninety percent of the album or ninety-five percent of the album has been original material. In fact most albums have been all original material. We did a Sonny Boy William's tune, we did a Seals & Crofts tune, Cotton Mouth and we did a Byrds tune, Jesus is Just Alright." JIM LADD: "Of course!" TOM JOHNSTON: "Which they jumped on and put out the minute we did it as a single." JIM LADD: "The Byrds did?" TOM JOHNSTON: "Yeah, they re-released their version of it because it was out long before ours was. That's where we got it from." JIM LADD: "It was off of "The Ballad of Easy Rider", as a matter of fact." TOM JOHNSTON: "We played that song for... ever since we got together." NATURAL THING TOM JOHNSTON: "It's like any other tune I've ever written, just about except for a couple. I was home in the bedroom, just plucking away. In fact I think I came up with a lot of it out on the road as a matter of fact. And I just started a chord progression and I liked it. I always write the music first and the lyrics later. I've always written that way, I can't write the other way around because of what I've gone through musically, I fit the words in rhythmically with the track it's just the way I think." "Natural Thing doesn't have any super-message, especially. It's just a feel good tune, you know, it's just got a happy feel to it, a nice balance, you know? And it gets into a little, I don't like to use the term, "Beatley thing", but the reason it came out that way is the ARP (synthesizer), which was programmed by Malcolm Cecil and those people that do Stevie Wonder, gave it that sound and made it sound sorta like "Benefit for Mr. Kite" or something off the Sergeant Pepper Album in that spot, we cut a circus sound in there."
