I don't know any of the "inside" details of this debate.  All I can say is 
that one of the things that originally turned me on to the Doobies was 
watching Skunk, live, jamming on his bar stool while wearing his headphones.  
He was like possessed!  And that had to be the coolest mustache in rock & 
roll.
