Under the standard (MBR) scheme, you can have up to four *primary*
partitions. One of these can be an *extended* partition, which can then
contain other *logical* partitions.
The limit to the number of logical partions is OS dependant. For
IDE/SATA disks on Linux I'm pretty sure it's 64.
