Thanks to John Cooper for his excellent instructions. I have now got back all my home stuff.
I haven't been able to get back the last couple of days emails, because I like evolution the way it was before the upgrade and don't want to restore all settings and data. editing fstab - because it is kubuntu I had to do everything via sudo. Kate wouldn't work because /home had disappeared. I couldn't remember the command in vi, so I had to try (and learn) nano. Thanks again.
