There can be corner-cases, e.g. people with some screen configurations,
  e.g. people who need some compiz-accessibility-plugins, ...

I note, interestingly:-

*apparently* Linux Mint, has its' own gnome-2-spinoff,
  included in upcoming 12.04...  (not seen it, etc.)
Lubuntu has a nice lightweight environment and now works
  well in 11.10.

May both be worth trying, if unity for-whatever-reason
  doesn't work, in my opinion...  Just my opinion =).
