Thanks everybody for your offers, I have resolved the problem by
discovering that k3b will write to the same drive that it has read a DVD
from, providing there is enough room in /tmp.
It's a long story involving trying to undo a pair of Raid drives and
make them normal drives, and re-installing Kubuntu on them .
