Hi,

This should answer the question https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457054.aspx

Note in particular this bit near the end:- /"//Finally, the Microsoft activation clearinghouse system will automatically allow activation to occur over the Internet four times in one year on substantially different hardware.////This last feature was implemented to allow even the most savvy power users to make changes to their systems and, if they must reactivate, do so over the Internet rather than necessitating a telephone call."/

So basically as long as the license isn't currently in use on another PC it should activate fine on your virtual PC.

Worst case you will have to use the automated phone activation system which invariably succeeds when online activation fails. I have used that successfully several times with Windows 7 (where online activation is a bit less lenient) and not yet had to be transferred to a human.

Thank you Terry for showing me all about VMWare Player. It installed
easily and I've installed Win XP and entered my licence key. So I'm
running the "sunset" version of MSMoney and everything is fine - except
XP is counting down the days to Armageddon.

Is it safe to try to register the XP? I've not done this for so many
years that I've forgotten the implications.

On the other hand, I discovered by accident that if I suspend the
"guest", when it starts up again the count hasn't changed - it's
actually at 28 now, but it knows the correct date. Can I rely on this
to keep MS away indefinitely?
I may not be qualified to answer that question. When I installed my copy of
XP, it was under an MSDN licence, so I was legally allowed multiple
activations anyway. I have re-installed and re-activated several times since,
but I may not have hit my limit yet.

I'm assuming that your copy is a personal one and your concern is that you
have already activated it once. As I say, I'm not a Windows expert, but my
recollection with XP is that you can activate it multiple times if you have
bought a full copy, eg a version that was bought 'stand-alone' for
installation on a PC from any source. If it's an OEM version, eg it came with
a PC, then I think the rules are different.

Any comment anyone?
