This makes me wonder whether your sound hardware is being treated as surround sound hardware, and the audio jack you are using has been incorrectly mapped to the subwoofer channel. If you are using PulseAudio, It might be worth checking what profile your sound card is set to, using pavucontrol, the KDE multimedia settings, or something like: pacmd info | grep -B50 "active profile" (Sorry, I don't know the equivalent for plain old ALSA.)
