Do you know if your APC 800VA surge protection is based on MOV, metal oxide varistor, and if so does it refuse to supply power when that gets too damaged over time rather than not protect? I've seen small `plug' MOV surge protectors and most just have a status LED, assuming it can be seen, so your spot when protection has stopped. Some, APC's IIRC, do actually cut the power.
