To my mind it seems more likely that router's Wi-Fi hardware, firmware or software has always contained the possibility of getting stuck in a partially non-working state sometimes, and rebooting can get it out of that state. We had an old Belkin router that did that sometimes, and it usually only affected a subset of the connected devices. After rebooting, it could go for weeks or months before it happened again. That thing never got any updates, which was probably half the problem.
