Sql sentences or ad-hoc SQL intermingled with code is definitely not recommended. Stored procedures are a better option in almost all cases.
.NET provides many built in checks and security features when you use Sql parameters which have to be done manually (and therefore dispensed with by most developers) when using ad hoc SQL.
