Hi to one and all,
I'm having a problem with a spreadsheet column on a template being generated
from a Visual Studio 2010, Excel WorkBook Template project. So... VSTO!
The column (already assigned a NamedRange) is supposed to contain date strings
in a VERY SPECIFIC NON-DATE format. These dates are used for genealogical
purposes and are intended to cover the period 1538 up till the present. For this
reason - the dates cover both Julian and Gregorian calendars - the entered vales
must be retained as strings.
The basic format that must be adhered to is 'dd Mmm yyyy/zz' where the yyyy/zz
notation is used in the years up till 1752, when the UK calendar changed from
Julian to Gregorian. Prior to 1752, the new year started on 25th March.
Consequently, it is not always easy to decide which year, dates within the 1st
Jan to 24th Mar period, belong to. Hence the double-dating notation.
Anyway, enough of the historical context. I have a validation routine that
decides whether an entered string is valid and also reformats a variety of entry
possibilities to the common format. That's not the problem! The main problem
that I can't seem to surmount occurs when I replace the value entered into the
cell with a correctly formatted value.
For example, the entered date of 25 Mar 1801 results in a green triangle in the
top-left corner of the cell and Excel trying to be helpful by suggesting that I
have a text date with a two-digit year. No I haven't! I think Excel is trying to
insist that the column should be formatted as dates, when all I want is a plain
text column - which is how the NamedRange was set up!
Help! What's going wrong? How can I get Excel to lay-off from messing about with
my data?
