You're right Joe. The application responsible for this issue is the
bootloader Syslinux (or Grub). I've read that newer versions are
supposed to support more characters than the 128 ones of ASCII.
Unfortunately I haven't enough free time to look at this issue and I
don't know if Debian has integrated such newer version.
