It wasn't ext3's fault actually after all what I noticed. In your other test the problems could be explained by maildir_copy_preserve_filenames=yes but I'm not actually sure about this. Can you still reproduce the errors with rc28?

I currently run a test with RC28, but it is very slow, because of lots of " stalled for 1356 secs in APPEND".

I see that you haven't included the patch:
http://dovecot.org/patches/debug/imap-append-hang-debug.diff
in RC28, is this intentional?

xfs is a lot slower than ext3 with maildir at least in my tests.

Doh, hm, I'm back to ext3 then.

When Ext3 opens a directory with many many files, the whole system slows down, an user managed to issue a tremendous slow down via NFS on the server. :-(

Bye.
