Did you run autogen.sh so that it downloads the doc/wiki/ contents?

I've downloaded it by myself from a nightly tarball. Does it make a
difference?

Then you don't need to run autoconf/automake at all. I don't have any problems with doing just ./configure;make for latest snapshot.
