It doesn't matter if the client hasn't seen the X-UIDL header, because it's Dovecot that uses it. The problem is anyway that your mbox -> maildir conversion didn't preserve the UIDVALIDITY and UIDs. I'm not aware of any existing conversion script that can preserve them.
