OK, there's one difference. It's not actually a dbox issue itself, but it's a Maildir++ vs. filesystem layout difference. So the same issue happens if you use e.g. mail_location=maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs. It's anyway more of a bug in Thunderbird, but if that workaround helps then I guess there isn't really a problem. :)
