Sounds like you have somehow just created a > mailbox called INDEX. You can probably just delete it.
It contains new messages. I assume this is the root email directory. My email client cannot rename that folder. Every other folder can be renamed. I have no folder called .INDEX in my maildir. I have, however, a file called dovecot.index -- Daniel
