I can't think of any reason why it would be related to indexes.

Looks like the error handling wasn't done correctly. Try with this patch
what it logs then: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/2f9d957332b6

Anyway my guess is that it'll report the file as being corrupted.
