Tough one. Caused by the 'doveauth' service permission changes added to my 
config before. Actually it was the global INBOX ACL owned by the wrong user, 
triggered by:

plugin {
  acl = vfile:/var/vmail/conf.d/%d/acls:cache_secs=300
 }
