Thunderbird has a protocol to get the settings but is DNS/xml related ( and is pretty normal because it not know the name of the mail server before ) https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Thunderbird/Autoconfiguration You need to serve an xml file on your webserver on the same domain.
