I was thinking about just this issue the other day - I wouldn't really want DQSD to always initiate a dial-up on my systems when they boot. I thought that maybe the first time you do a search with DQSD after it loads, it could do the version check then? Obviously, if you don't use DQSD, you won't get told about updates, but then you probably wouldn't care...
