So, I have just committed a version.js, which references the new correct URL, and loads the remote version.xml without locking up explorer.exe.
Feel free to pull it out and test.
I've done so (well, I used your zipped version) and it seems fine. It would have taken me a week to learn enough about MSXML to have implemented that!
I still think it would be user- (possibly not now it's async) and SF-friendly to move to using a version.xml which can be served statically rather than fetched out of their CVS repository every time.
Now we need someone to do a build so that 'ordinary' users can get this...
