The problem then becomes the long-time users installing a fresh copy
on a new system.

It should be simple enough to just prompt everyone with a dialogue
that lists each 'default' alias with a checklist (defaulting to false
for most of these annoying ones - or with 'profile' options (like
"programmer/geek", "ebay fanatic/online shopper" and "newspaper
editor/nerd") that have certain features enabled and disabled per
their likely use), then write out the aliases file from that.
