Summary: Explorer freezes with DQSD

Initial Comment:
I am having serious problems with the latest version of
DQSD. XP Pro will not complete booting. When I uninstall
DQSD (in Safe Mode, no less), upon rebooting the
system still attempts to load DQSD. I get a blank
document in the taskbar that says "server not found." I
received one suggestion to put a command in
preferences.js to keep DQSD from checking sourceforge
upon starting. This has not helped. What's wierd is that
even if I uninstall DQSD, the system still tries to load it.
I've completely deleted all the files, I've cleaned up the
Registry, I've checked all the Startup locations, and I
cannot find whatever it is that is trying to start DQSD.

Yesterday, the system worked fine after I did right
clicked on the Taskbar to disable the (non-working)
DQSD Toolbar. Yesterday, after getting rid of
the "Server not found" error, right clicking again did not
offer me the option to activate DQSD (i.e, the menu
option was not available). When I rebooted a few
minutes ago, the Taskbar froze on me. I used Windows
Task Mgr to kill Explorer and restart it. I was then able
to right click on the Taskbar and deslect the DQSD
Toolbar. But the taskbar/Start Menu is currently frozen
and unavailable to me.

So there are two problems:

1. DQSD keeps getting loaded even after it's uninstalled.

2. DQSD is freezing my Taskbar upon restarting Explorer.

I'd like to get DQSD working, but short of that, at least
be able to run my system without it. Any debug options
I can run to provide a system trace for DQSD? Please
advise.

Hi Brian,

What's the current status of this? Do you have the same
problem with the current version?

Thanks,

Shawn

Ok, I don't think anyone is listening, but I'll add more info to
this bug report. Dave's taskbar is still trying to run after I
have uninstalled it and thoroughly cleaned the disk of any
remnants I can find. Today, I found this in
the /windows/prefetch/ directory

DAVCDATA.EXE-2BC9C8AA.pf

Can someone who knows the install routine please take a look
at this problem? My machine is still strung up by this
application. I'd hate to have to go out on the net and start
bad mouthing this application, but I'm about to put in the
effort.

Hi Brian,

I've seen similar behaviour, but I never really investigated
under which conditions they appeared. However, to fix this,
you should be able to:

- Remove the value {226b64e8-dc75-4eea-a6c8-
abcb4d1d37ff} from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Shell Extensions\Approved
- Remove the entire key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{226b64e8-dc75-4eea-a6c8-
abcb4d1d37ff}

The first one is what maps DQSD as an Explorer extension,
and the second one is what makes DQSD createable at all.

I believe the toolbar will still be loaded on your task bar, but
you should be able to just right-click and remove it from there.

Hope that helps.

The beta fix is NOT solving the problem. Hello, anyone out
there?

I installed DQSD using an installation logger, attached. Among
many entries, it shows

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\DQSD-318.EXE-23BE2350.pf

Could this be the problem? Is this not getting unhooked or
removed upon de-installation?

Or perhaps it is this one that looks for the file 'search.htm'?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{226b64e8-
dc75-4eea-a6c8-abcb4d1d37ff}\SecureFile="C:\Program
Files\Quick Search Deskbar\search.htm"

Because the behavior I see after unintalling DQSD is the
taskbar attempts to load 'search.htm' and cannot find it. The
taskbar then freezes.

This problem continues to plauge my machine, and me. On
occasion DQSD will load and run correctly, but more often
than not it does not.

Even though I went into safe mode to do the uninstall, I have
the same problem. What's worse, the entire task bar is
disabled. I cannot seem to DQSD's hooks out of my system. I
ran a startup check and looked for browser helper objects,
and cannot find anything related to DQSD. There is something
low level going on early in the UI initialization that is not
getting removed. This is a HUGE problem for me. Can someone
please look into this?

the thing successfully. Any clues anyone!?!
