Sounds like a good thread for me to introduce myself. I've been remiss for not jumping in sooner. I am the one that approached Dave directly about redistributing the deskbar. My lawyers told me I didn't need to but I thought it was the right thing to do. In short order one of our HotBot developers will discuss some of the ideas we have been banetering around. Below is a synopsis of a couple. Thanks for the kind words about our integrity.
I'll say what I have said to Dave and Glenn. This is the absolutely the coolest toolbar I have ever seen, bar none. I congratulate everyone involved with this project and maybe your work might be see on a search engine near you soon!?
I am considering integrating some of the functionality (searches) available within the Deskbar right into the HotBot site. What I mean is integrating shortcuts into HotBot. I thought this would be a great way of allowing users to make it "their search engine". This will take a while to flesh out as I am trying to figure out if we should keep the selections which users make "active" synchronized between the site and the local deskbar.
We have also been discussing devising a meta shortcut interface that would allow multiple "like" searches to be be strung together and presented on a tabbed interface. We could create a server-side page/API that accepts form post data and constructs the tabs with hyperlinks. We would create another "search XML" file that strings together all the data necessary to send to our page. Perhaps we would start a convention to start the name of the file with "m", like "mQt" for "multiple or meta quote". Other logical times you might want the meta might be for:
-- [ mWeb ] Web Searching (of course that's why you have HotBot though ;-)
-- [ mNews ] News
-- [ mWp ] White Pages
-- [ mDir ] Directions
-- [ mDld ] Downloads
-- [ mRef ] Reference (that strung together Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia)
...others surely too
