Yeah, I also hide all titles and stuff on the taskbar, to get the maximum space possible, and I would never display a static image...
 
However, a graphic (or short text) that represents the current default search method would be quite nice...
 
For example, you could add a graphic for various search engines (like the Google or Download.com logo) or if the graphic for that search engine is not present, use the shortcut text (like "gg" or "av" or "freedb")... In that case it would definitely add extra functionality ;-)

As long as you can hide it, like you can with the word 'Search', then I guess it is not a problem.  I just don't understand why anyone would want to have part of their taskbar wasted on a graphic that doesn't do anything.
