Hi Gang, Hope someone may have some answers to my problem. It started out when I could not tune up my T4-XC. In the tune position, the plate current was very low with the drive all the way up, and would just peter out to idle current after a few seconds in tune, CW, and AM. But in SSB if I whistled in the mic, I could sort of tune up OK...kind of hard to whistle a stead amplitude!
Put it on the bench and connected it to my VARIAC at 120v, and all was great! Drive control position was normal, plate current was normal. I could leave it in tune as long as desired into my dummy load. I replaced the finals and driver just to be on the safe side and all was well. Then started to lower the VARIAC output from 120 downward with the rig in tune. When I got to about 112 volts, the output wavered and then went to idle. If I return the voltage to 114, the rig works normally, plenty of drive. Just a little below that and the drive drops like a rock. Also the CW side tone oscillator peters slowly out at the lower voltage, but is fine at higher voltages. The voltages from the power supply all look normal, but not being regulated, they follow the 120 volt input. I swiped the supply from my TR-4CW/rit and tried it on the T4-XC with exactly the same results. Does anyone know if this is normal for Drake? My Line voltage is all over the place, as I am the second to the last driveway on a long feeder from the center of town. I have my own pole transformer by the house...1000" long driveway. The line bounces from 108 to 130 volts over time. I am running a line to the shack from the fuse panel to monitor both sides of the line with precision meters and will contact the power company after I get a little data. Sorry this is so long, but has anyone had trouble with a T4-XC/AC4 like this? By the way, the ripple in the high and medium B+ is well with in Drakes specs.
