Steve,
Mine has the smell of rancid fried fish. Or at least that is the best I
can describe it. Not sure what the bilge of a sail boat might be, but am
guessing similar to scummed up lake water. Not quite the same smell.
I have had some luck in just going inside and cleaning the dust out. I
*think* mine may have been caused by the previous owner having the PS7
around food frying. It is currently non-smelling. I just took a dry
cloth and dusted out the inside of the PS7. An now awaiting the "test of
time" results. My PS7 was never really grimed up, so I never cleaned it.
I added a fan after finding a reasonable fan at a hamfest. The Drake
reunion video had the PS7 engineer on stating that with a fan keeping
the caps cool the PS7 would run 25 amp "all day". After adding the fan,
I noticed the smell issue.
I will let the list know how thing turn out for me. I am also going to
stop by one of the local electronic outlets to see what they may have as
far as caps. I am hoping I can find some surplus with newer date codes
that might work well. If I do, I will also let the list know.
73,
Ron

And I have noticed the smell as well. Am I to understand that it comes from
the caps? If they are available and 20 a piece, I'd have to say that it
smells to me like a good deal because I am tired of my shack smelling like the
bilge of an old sailboat (can't think of what else to liken it to).
Who is a good source - Mouser, Digikey?
Thanks
