Drake Lovers, last week I sent out an email about the Drake L7 10 meter
modification. I found what little information there is on the subject and
proceeded to do those changes to enable 10 meters. After all done with
them, I gave the amp a try on 15 and 10 meters. For some reason the 10 meter
modification included adding a capacitor to the 15m coil. What that has to
do with 10 meters beats me. Suffice to say the results were less than
desirable! Checking with Evan and Ron to see if I made mistakes, they
confirmed what I had seen which is a VERY poor input swr on both bands. The
swr I
was reading was in excess of 1.7 to 1 or higher. My radio would only
produce 500w output due to fold back of the exciter. Unless one has a tube
exciter or a radio with a tuner, you are not in good shape to make anywhere
near full power. I could only get about 40w drive from my Icom 746. Over the
next four days after the modification I worked on the fix required to get
a flat swr on both bands. Hopefully within the coming weeks a full spread
photos and data should be able to be seen on Ron's website outlining the
required procedure needed to fix this problem. If you have an L7 that the 10
mod was done and the 15 and 10m input swr is very poor, you'll want to see
