DREAM : pk league
=( last evening i went into the university to meet with my grader so he
could be trained on grading the last assignment of the term. i got back
around 21:30 but my mother had gone to bed early to read a book. i did
some email work for a couple hours and went to bed myself around 23:30.
i read _prisoner's dilemma_ until 02:00. this is a shallow history on
game theory, mostly a brief biography of von neumann in the early part at
least. )=
in the days after the great war of the apocalypse in which people wander
the earth in search of things that could neither be manufactured nor
distributed, i came upon the psychokinetic league forming up softball
teams in the desert of arizona. for some reason unknowable to the
survivors, the effects of the peripheral effects of genetic bombs were to
mutate the brains so that the very fabric of space could be torn. this
resulted in a new variety of person that move objects with their thought
processes. so common were these people and so sudden their appearance
that society never went through a rejection and persecution phase, but
rather we had to reshape the rules of behavior to accommodate these new
abilities. i was not one of the new people, or at least no such powers
were noticeable in me yet.
it turned out that the bending of space was very tiring, requiring great
amounts of energy and concentration. only a few were strong enough in
their new powers to actually deflect the path of the softball into their
gloves. this had to do with the natural deformation of space by matter
which we call gravity. i was told that on space stations outside the
gravity well of the planet this would be an easier task, but since those
satellites had been the first casualties of the war, it was unlikely
anyone could confirm this very soon.
it was, however, easier to make a small puncture in space so an object
could fall through it and transfer from one location to another without
being present in the intervening adjacent locations. for some reason
unknown to me, the distance between the entry and exit of the spatial rip
was not very noticeably more difficult on the person creating it. the
size and duration of the opening were proportional to the effort to
achieve the displacement.
so, to bend space enough to change the flight of a softball required a
series of space holes only separated far enough for the ball to appear to
travel along a nonnewtonian direction. like a movie frame, each step was
discrete but a series of them is close and rapid succession would appear
to be a smooth motion which the eye could not perceive. that is why the
bending of space seemed so difficult for the psychokinetic league.
but making a single discrete jump of the falling ball into your glove was
much easier, requiring only one spacetime puncture. it made the game
harder for spectators to follow. a fly ball would vanish in midflight so
one of the outfielders would have to hold it up once it appeared in their
glove. if the right fielder missed the ball with the mental space hole,
the center fielder or left fielder might snag it. this allowed for much
amusement to the spectators, especially when all three of the fielders
missed, the ball actually hit the ground and the players had to scurry
after it.
infield play was generally too fast to intercept a line drive, but a
grounder was generally transported directly to the first baseman's glove.
the catcher is not allowed to bypass the strike zone. the pitcher,
however, can generate a displacement, then pitch the ball into it, so it
makes a discontinuous path from leftside to rightside for instance. the
strain on the pitcher is to hold the displacement open long enough and
wide enough for the ball to pass through it. so faster, more accurate
pitches are better to achieve the effect.
the batter has two small advantages. when a pitcher has to yawn open a
displacement and throw the ball through it, light also passes through
before the ball does. since the light is no longer traveling in a
straight line, it is noticeable as a blur or glow on the point of exit.
as the blurred spot has to be on a line with the strike zone, the batter
can sometimes see it in time to adjust his swing. the main advantage,
however, is for the batter to transport the ball before the basemen do.
not every pitch can be pked or the pitcher would wear out too soon. fast
hit balls are too difficult for any one but an outfielder to intercept,
but the slower grounders can be scooped away, often by the batter who is
the closest to the object and may have some anticipation of where the
ball is hit. this gives rise to the most treasured play called 'bunting
for the fence'. a homerun ball has to be seen crossing over the
outfield fence, most easily done from the bunt.
=( i woke around 08:30 still thinking about the problems associated with
this softball league. i believe there was a part, somehow not in the
dream directly, but rather collateral with it. it had to do with the
dictum "those who do not work, do not eat". the telekinetics did not
have to eat. they could teleport the food directly into their stomachs.
of course, an apple unchewed would block the pyloric sphincter causing
pain or death. so only food well chopped up would be zapped directly
into their stomachs. the best place to get that was directly from the
stomachs of someone nearby who was eating. odd concept i suppose, but
the pk people would not have to eat, so they need not work. i wonder
what other body functions they could replace by direct transference of
material... impregnation or child birth probably. )=

Dream Title Long Way From Home- submitted by Homeward Bound
Date of Dream April 26, 1999
Dream I dreamed that I was bicycling home from a house.
It was an ordinary house and two guys lived there. (I don't know these guys
in real life but they are familiar to me. Like I have seen them before).
One guy had long brown hair. The other was a guy that I dreamed about, I
know I have seen him at the bowling alley that my sister works at. He is
probably in his 40's. The guy with the long hair was my age I think. I had
a backpack on my back while I was on the bike. I am not sure what was in
it. I remember being on a long road and it was getting to be near
nighttime. The road was a straight road, but not a highway. The road had
traffic lights on it, and I could see various buildings on both sides. Like
a two-lane business street with shops. It was however, a pretty quiet road.
There were no people walking around. I know I felt that I was a long way
from my home. In my dream, I realized that I was traveling the wrong way. I
was on the wrong road and even th!
!
ough I had a light for riding at night, and reflectors, I thought it was
too dangerous to keep riding home at this point. I turned around and went
back to the house I came from. By this time it was dark outside. When I
went inside, I told the guys what happened and that I thought I should wait
until morning before going home because it would be safer. I remember
giving a pack of Marlboro Lt. Cigarettes to the younger guy. It was a full
pack. I told them I didn't use them. (In real life, I had quit smoking in
January.) I also recall that the road I was biking on had a road that you
could turn onto on the right shoulder. It was not a two-way road. You could
only go up it. It was a wide one way, one lane road. It was a long road and
it was darker over that road than the one I was on. Like the sky was
darker, or the night was later over that road. It wasn't spooky but it did
not feel like I should go on that road at night. It was 400. That was the
name of the road. I saw the name !
!
of it on a green highway sign that hung over of the road. I also remember
that as it got darker, more cars were on the road I was on and it was not
as quiet.
Comments by Dreamer I have been on medical leave with my current job
for almost a year now. Since I have to go on leave I had to move home with
my parents sinceI could not afford to live on my own. They are in a
different state than I was living in. I hate being here and I have been
here for a long time now. I was getting ready to resume my job again, but
my medical condition may have come back and now my car is no longer running
properly. It is like all these unknown forces are keeping here in this
place I hate being! I am 29 and just want my life back. I want to be on my
own again. Does this dream reflect any clues as to why obstacles keep
getting in my way from leaving here?
