 IIRC, I fixed this by downgrading either automake or autoconf, or it
may have been both.  It was a while ago, so I'm a little hazy on detail.
Certainly there have been a lot of changes in automake particularly,
which also break building a lot of GNOME packages, until the packages
in question get "upgraded" to support it.
