Just disable VERTEX LIGHTING under the Graphics tab in Settings for Tribes 2 enables the "shiny environment map".
Don't know if enabling Vertex Lighting is required, a enhancement to Graphics or simply away to disable certain effects. Anyone with knowledge on this issue could comment.
