This issue can indeed be resolved by disabling the DRI.  Perhaps this was
lost in my previous post, I admit it was quite lengthy and not the best
organized.

So, to clarify.  When DRI is disabled, I am able to switch virtual
consoles without any lockups.  It is only when the DRI is enabled that the
lockup occurs.

It may also be useful to note that GL applications are unstable with the
DRI enabled and occassionally cause system locks.  I don't know if this is
a related problem, and I haven't investigated it's conditions fully
because they are only intermittent and hard to reproduce exactly.
