We've been applying ESR's patch also, and it does not solve the 
problem.  Also, I've just applied a patch from ATI which seemed 
to solve the problem on some test systems they have there, 
however my machines still hang with the new patches, and I've 
gotten feedback from beta testers that they problems still exist 
as well.

In all cases reported so far, DRI seems to be involved in the 
problem.

Still trying to determine the cause.  If I make any headway, I'll 
report back here.
