I needed to add that line to rc.local. I wonder why it doesn't load by
it self? It did with XFree86-4.2.0.

I have the exact same setup as you, I'm using gnome2 and noticed that my
fonts were not the same when I upgraded to
XFree86-4.2.99.2-0.20021110.5. Have you noticed the same?
